My Games   Round 3   4

In this game, I beat Alexandra as black (at 8 ply, the highest level). There were a few errors on my part, as I forgot the en passant rule. I played the Caro-Kann Exchange Variation, the Panov-Botvinnik Attack.

White to Move: Increase pressure

After this tactic, I was able to win a rook for a knight, but the computer retained the bishop pair, which was always dangerous tactically.

White to Move: How Can White Divert the Dark-Squared Black Bishop to Initiate an Attack?

White to Move: How does white win the black bishop?

White to Move: I blundered here and played g2-g4, forgetting the en passant move for black!

White to Move: Can you see how white broke through black's barrier?

I eventually won this game because of my material advantage. After exchange my rook and knight for Black's pawns and bishop, I had two passed pawns, which a lone king cannot defend against.

I learned from this game that it is important to increase the pressure in the middle game phase while still playing cautiously. I often overstep my mark in the middle game and lose everything. Also, I could have played the endgame better.

I enjoy playing this dedicated chess computer because it plays more like an ordinary human than Fritz and other hardcore computer programs that leave no chances for human players or play crazy moves when the engine is weakened.

Score: 5-3 in favor of the computer
